This is the cause we see most often. Leaves, twigs, moss from roof tiles and windblown debris gather in the gutter, particularly near outlets. Water can no longer reach the downpipe quickly enough, so it backs up and spills over the front or rear edge.

Moss deserves particular attention. It may look harmless on the roof, but rain washes it down in clumps that can form a dense plug inside a gutter or downpipe. Homes close to mature trees usually need more frequent checks, especially during autumn and after prolonged windy weather.

A blocked or undersized downpipe

Your gutters may look clear from ground level, yet water can still overflow because the downpipe is blocked lower down. Debris can lodge at the bend, where the downpipe enters the drain, or at an underground connection. Water then has nowhere to go and rises back towards the gutter outlet.

In some cases, the pipe is clear but too small for the roof area or the amount of water being collected. This can be an issue where an extension, conservatory roof or altered roof layout channels additional rain into an existing system. Increasing the capacity or adding another downpipe may be a better long-term answer than repeatedly clearing the same gutter.

Incorrect fall along the gutter run
